How to Grow Food on a Balcony in Vancouver

Don’t let limited space stop you from growing your own food! With the right setup, your balcony can become a mini urban farm—even in Vancouver’s rainy climate.

  1. Choose the Right Crops

Go for compact, fast-growing edibles like cherry tomatoes, dwarf peppers, lettuce, spinach, radishes, green onions, and herbs (basil, mint, parsley). Strawberries also do well in hanging baskets.

  1. Maximize Space

Use vertical planters, railing boxes, or stackable pots. Hanging baskets are great for trailing crops like nasturtiums or strawberries. A small shelf unit can also double your growing area.

  1. Consider Sunlight

South or west-facing balconies are ideal. No sun? Leafy greens and herbs can still thrive with partial light or under grow lights.

  1. Use Quality Containers & Soil

Choose pots with drainage holes and fill them with a light, organic potting mix. Add compost or slow-release fertilizer regularly.

  1. Water Smart

Water deeply when the top inch feels dry. Balcony plants dry out faster due to wind—check daily in summer.
